The Mount, Guildford

This is one of the nicest houses on The Mount. From the front the views are over a field to the Chantries, Chinthurst Hill, and Blackheath, with the houses of Warwicks Bench to the side providing a fine show in the evenings. Below them, down The Mount, is the view of Guildford Town. From the back the views are out past the towers of Woking to London. In the winter, when the leaves are off the trees, Guildford Cathedral floats at eye level, floodlit in the evenings. It’s full of light: the house faces the morning sun, and the summer afternoon warmth pours in to the garden and back.
Because of the field, there are no houses across the street. The Mount itself is an ancient road, deeply cut and below the level of the house. This is where the garages are, and the cars pass out of sight. It is also a cul-de-sac, so there is little traffic by comparison with most streets. This is a quiet and peaceful spot.
The location is superb. Guildford’s fine town centre is a few hundred metres at the foot of the hill, accessed across the pedestrianized Town Bridge over the River Wey, with its National Trust navigations and locks. A few hundred meters above the house are the fields and open meadows of the Hogs Back with views north and south. Also within a very short walk is Guildford station, with fast and frequent links to London and the coast, and to the airports and the west.

No 56 The Mount is a beautifully kept Edwardian semi-detached house and arranged on three floors and retaining many original features. The open plan ground floor opens out to the back garden through six elegant and tall doors, and can be divided by a fine teak and glass screen. On the next two floors are three generous bedrooms each with a bath and shower room. There is also a study and nursery. The house has a cellar/utility room and benefits from the convenience of two garages, each wired for electric car charging.
Outside, the front and back gardens exhibit the care and attention lavished on them over thirty years by the current owners. The front garden is a riot of colourful planting, and benefits from the borrowed views to the field. There is a small private seating area where the views to the town can be enjoyed in the sunshine with morning coffee. To the back is a patio, and a garden large enough to provide ample space and outlook without being too burdensome. There are seating areas for every time of the day, pleasingly private. Structure in this area is provided by three magnolia trees and a morello cherry, which bears strongly – perfect for cherry pies and compotes!
